Although the Zoom F3 field recorder is not primarily designed to record ultrasound, the specification is such that the unit can actually create high quality ultrasonic recordings, when fitted with a suitable ultrasonic microphone.
The intention here is to record and monitor the ultrasonic echo-location calls of bats. The 32 bit float format of the F3 is ideally suited to that task, as the bat calls have a notoriously unpredictable dynamic range.
As most ultrasonic bat calls are beyond the range of human hearing, it is also useful to be able to audibly monitor what is being recorded - in real time .... A frequency shifting 'heterodyne' style bat detector can perform that task.
